Spelling Homework

Spelling Homework
Dear Parents,
We will be starting our spelling homework from the 7th of March. Your child will get a spelling list to learn for the whole term glued at the back of their home reading notebook. These spelling words have been chosen from the essential spelling list. It is expected that your child practise their list at least four times a week so that the new learning gets transferred to their long term memory.




On Thursdays, your child will be tested and the mark will be recorded next to the list for you to see. The whole list is tested once a term and your child will be given a new list if he/she scores higher than 90%, if below 90% the same list will be repeated for the next term.

Hi Adele, I'm a tad confused. The list on the back of Emma's home reading notebook says "List 2", but is rather different than the "List 2" above. For example, the one in her book includes "tooth" and "teeth", neither of which are on the List 2 above. "Had" is on both List 2's, yet "Have" is on our List 2 but on List 3 above.

Also, the rows on our home list week #'s, unlike the above. So what are the words we're meant to be going over? Granted, many of our kids will no doubt be able to spell a great many of the words all the way up to List 7 above. But it would be helpful to have a finite list of the words on which the students will be tested.

Thank you for your comment. You are right, there are some differences between the lists. I adopted the general list above to create a new set of lists that cater for the needs of our children.

One of the main reasons why we encourage children to learn spelling at this age is to help them with their writing so I thought the spelling list needs to reflect the needs of the writer, our children, so I've made some changes to the existing list by adding some words (this may be their personal interest words such as tooth and teeth, or topic words that they may be learning at school this term such as treaty, teamwork, virtues).

So going back to your question, weekly she will be tested on the list that is on the back of her home reading book. But if you find that she doesn't know the words on list 2 above which should be easier, please help her learn these words as well.

The reason why there are only 4 words a week to give you the opportunity to teach your child other spelling rules that you might find she needs when you are teaching these 4 words such as tooth and teeth, foot and feet. You might want to go further and teach goose and geese. You might want to go back to the list above and see if there are any words that I did not add to her weekly list that she needs to learn. Feel free to go over any words that you think she needs to learn preferably easiest to hardest but not necessarily in that order. ☺
